Tonight we will find out something very important about these Red Wings. Are they the same team that we've seen over the last two years -- one that lacks a killer instinct unless they're pushed up against the wall -- or is this version finally ready to quit messing around and just finish off an inferior opponent. They say they're focused, but they always say that, because there's nothing else you can say. I fully expect a loss tonight, maybe of the 3-1 or 2-0 variety, but I really hope I'm proven wrong. The Wings need to take care of this series in five games at most so they can sit around and wait with Henrik Zetterberg healing up while the Sharks struggle to finish off the Kings. (Freep)
The Chicago Blackhawks came out of the gates Sunday night looking like a team that was defending its Stanley Cup championship. The rest of the game, though, they looked like a team that was lacking quality depth playing against a team that has an abundance of it. Now the Blackhawks are on the verge of being swept out of the playoffs, which is awesome. At the same time, it would have been nice had Vancouver been forced to sweat a little bit. Hopefully Nashville or Anaheim can provide that in round two. (Chicago Tribune)
The other two series played on Sunday are now at 2-1, as Brandon Dubinsky's mustache tightened things up for the Rangers and the Predators picked up a home win against the Ducks in what may be the most entertaining series of the playoffs which has yet to have a game nationally televised. The Tigers slipped back into "can't hit at all" mode this weekend, dropping the final two games of a series in Oakland to split it. The terrible inconsistency of this team is going to drive us all crazy all season long. Just be prepared for that. (DetNews)
The NBA Playoffs are off to an unbelievable start, with all eight games being competitive and interesting. The big story is San Antonio and Los Angeles both losing. The Spurs are going to get Manu Ginobli back, but they still might be in trouble against a Memphis team that has been real good down the stretch. The Lakers, meanwhile, had no answer for Chris Paul, who was outstanding. Will that continue? Probably not, because Paul's supporting cast is, um, not very good. But it was definitely a wake-up call for the Lakers. Oh, and the Knicks may have gotten jobbed on a shit-tastic offensive foul, but Carmelo Anthony was brutal in the loss to the Celtics. Harrison Barnes is coming back, so North Carolina is you're preseason No. 1. Of course, that doesn't matter, because they'll probably lose to Holy Cross in next year's NCAA Tournament, a team that will go onto become the first 16-seed to not only win a first-round game, but also make the Final Four, which will include two 6s and Butler. I bitch about the snow, but I suppose I would rather deal with the inconvenience of some cold weather and slippery roads than giant fucking tornadoes tearing through town. (Charlotte Observer)
OK, I don't know if this is really amazing, considering that we know the kind of damage that it left behind, but ... OK, this is amazing:
